Modern Technology Pas de Deux
Ahhhhh! Green padlock? Done. Stop the Hacker? Done. So why oh why oh why has my email been hacked/cloned/used sending virus laden attachments?
Well apparently it’s spoofing – what a lovely word for the horrible bunch of people doing it. I immediately contacted my service provider and they’ve replied as follows:
This type of email spoofing is very common and it is very easy to become confused by them, especially when they seem to be entirely legitimate.
In the two examples you provided, the following are the ‘reply’ addresses
These are clever fakes made to look like your address, but are not your address, and it relies on your email client software to misinterpret the information.
It is nothing that you should really worry about, and you can safely delete/ignore messages like this. I’m afraid that they are impossible to prevent, much as we may wish to do so.
So if you receive an email from either of these addresses, please don’t open it or anything attached to it. Delete appropriately and feel happy that the demands for money are not going to be fulfilled! On the other hand, if you are a hacker too, feel free to send their horrible virus back to them; what’s the old saying? “if you encourage a plague, you can’t be surprised when you catch it”.
